“Because I saved your body. But you saved my soul.” Yes. This is exactly what working in a job like that feels like. The things I see in Pediatric ICU have the potential to wreck me, but I am saved by the people whose lives I am eternally linked to simply because I do the work that I do.
This blog by Elise continues to speak to me emotionally and intellectually. She offers perspective that needs to be said and says it so others resonate to her words. Please continue to write. We all need your words.
As a mental health provider and leader for 40+ therapists at our org, I can attest that there is something so privileged in being able to do this work. While it's so hard, I cannot imagine NOT being of service. I feel so lucky to get to do this for a living. To save my soul each time I witness a client's growth, healing and bravery. I too, believe that the way forward is more service. Let's hope <3
What a beautiful story! I'm married to a Vietnam vet and ER/trauma doctor. I was often in the ER because I was the PR/spokesperson of the hospital when the media were present at the hospital. Once I saw a trauma where a father had killed his two-year-old daughter, and then he set himself on fire. The trauma of the ER staff who were in one room with the dead child while others tried to save the perpetrator was horrific. I'll never forget the trauma I witnessed on their faces that day. ER staff members are all true heroes who do not receive mental health care for the work they do. Thank you for this beautiful story.
Ah ha! I did the Leonardo Di Caprip pointing meme when Dr Robby did the 4 things that matter. That, along with Dying for Sex I think have done more for the collective culture - through tv - to shift how we die in less than ‘ideal’ places/times. Got to the heart of it, great to see.
I love the conversation about The Pitt! Mary and I just binge watched it this last weekend and it was riveting. I loved it. Thanks for sharing this connection. See you Sunday!
I also started watching this show on an airplane! It is so incredibly well-done. I appreciated the way it tackled the big issues I’ve focused on in my work over the last few years - fentanyl in fake pills, access to abortion/reproductive health care, and loneliness and disconnection in boys. I took a video of Dr. Robby’s speech on young men for our “Talk To Your Boys” Instagram page.
