Facts vs. Stories

A practical tool for dealing with conflict.

CAPTION:

Tough family conversations ahead? Here’s Diana Chapman and Jim Dethmer on Facts vs. Stories in The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership: “Stories are interpretations of the facts. Stories include all judgments, opinions and beliefs that we derive from the facts. The way the mind works is that it takes in facts/data and then it makes up stories about the facts. All stories are made up. They are not TRUE. They are simply the way we see the world. Conscious leaders make a clear and constant distinction between facts and stories they make up about the facts. They make sure that all facts are out on the table and then they encourage the expression of stories. They create a culture where stories (opinions, judgments, beliefs) are all welcome. They also create a culture where it is understood that stories are made up by the story maker and that they are not true.” More on how to pull these apart and get better at conversations in last week’s newsletter.
