Per my girl Barbara Walker, hocus pocus “was a corruption of hoc est corpus meum, ‘this is my body,’ from the communion service.” So essentially: it suggests something alchemical but is really just jibber jabber. (Abracadabra on the other hand is one of my favorite etymologies and ideas.)
